Pepperdine Loses to Montana State, 81-78
Montana State held off a late Pepperdine rally to defeat the Waves, 81-78, in the consolation game of the Hawaii Tip Off Classic Sunday at Honolulu.
After trailing 77-66 with 5:45 left in the second half, Pepperdine made a furious second half comeback. The Waves outscored the Bobcats 12-2, with reserve guard Shann Ferch capping it off with a 3-pointer to bring the Waves within one, 79-78.
However, the Bobcats’ Alonzo Stephens made two free throws with 13 seconds left to ice the victory for the Bobcats. Pepperdine had two chances to tie, but missed their 3-point opportunities.
Stephens led all scorers with 29 points, making 7 of 11 attempts from behind the 3-point line. The 5-foot 10-inch guard was 8 of 15 from the field, with 7 assists and 5 rebounds.
Reserve guards Dexter Griffen scored 11 points for the Bobcats, while Todd Dickson had 10.
Pepperdine was led by Tom Lewis, who had 19 points and Dexter Howard, who had 18 and 14 rebounds.
