College Basketball Roundup : Las Vegas Defeats Memphis State in Overtime
Freshman Anderson Hunt scored 27 points, including two free throws with 39 seconds left in overtime Sunday to give No. 8 Nevada Las Vegas a 90-86 victory over Memphis State and third place in the Maui Classic at Lahaina, Hawaii.
David Butler, who finished with 20 points, tied the score on a turnaround jumper with 1:13 left and Hunt made his two free throws after Memphis State’s Elliott Perry missed a drive and Hunt was fed a long pass with the rebound.
Rodney Douglas led Memphis State with 22 points; Perry had 20.
Ohio State 97, Vanderbilt 82--Perry Carter scored 20 points and Jay Burson had 19 as the No. 16 Buckeyes finished fifth in the Maui Classic.
The Buckeyes broke the game open with a 17-3 run that gave them a 34-17 lead with 9:18 left in the first half. Vanderbilt had 15 first-half turnovers as Ohio State took a 57-41 halftime lead.
Eric Reid led Vanderbilt with 25 points.
DePaul 89, Chaminade 68--Brad Niemann set a school record with 7 three-point field goals and scored 25 points as the Blue Demons finished seventh in the Maui Classic.
Villanova 63, Davidson 47--The No. 11 Wildcats held Davidson to 11-of-42 shooting as they finished third in the San Juan Shootout at Bayamon, P.R.
Senior guard Doug West scored 14 points in a 5-minute span in the first half to break open a close game as Villanova took a 36-21 halftime lead. West finished with 18 points.
The only Davidson player in double figures was guard Alan Hunter with 15.
Florida 77, Utah 68--Clifford Lett scored 19 points to lead a balanced Florida attack as the Gators finished fourth in the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, Alaska.
Utah’s Van Gray sank five 3-pointers, all in the second half, to finish with a tournament-record 13 for the Shootout.
Washington 97, Colorado 87--Mark West scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Huskies to a season-opening victory over the Buffaloes (1-1) at Seattle.
Dion Brown added 18 points, 14 in the first half, for the Huskies, who led at halftime, 38-37.
Shaun Vandiver led Colorado with 21 points.
U. San Diego 64, New Mexico 53--Wayman Strickland led a balanced attack with 14 points as the University of San Diego defeated New Mexico, 64-53, for the championship of the inaugural Lobo Classic at Albuquerque, N.M.
The Toreros fell behind 13-0 in the first 4:30 but came back to outscore the Lobos, 27-13, and take a 27-26 halftime lead.
Lehigh 86, Loyola of Maryland 72--Freshman Dozie Mbonu scored 18 points to lead Lehigh to the victory over Loyola in the consolation game of the Lobo tournament.
Cincinnati 75, N. Kentucky 63--Cedric Glover scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half to lead Cincinnati to victory in its season opener.
