Acting Pakistan President Ghulam Ishaq Khan will name a prime minister Thursday, state-run television said in Islamabad, adding that the new leader will take office Friday. Earlier, the government had said the prime minister would not be named until Dec. 5, when members of the new National Assembly will take the oath of office. Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, whose Pakistan People’s Party won 45% of the assembly seats in the Nov. 16 general election, has said she should lead the next government. Pakistan’s constitution allows the president to name as prime minister the candidate believed most likely to command majority support.
