The first annual distribution of the European Film Awards--the answer of a uniting Europe to America’s Oscars--was accomplished Saturday, with a Polish film, “A Short Film About Killing,” winning the best-film plaudit. Among the other first-time winners of the “Felix”: Swedish actor Max von Sydow (for “Pelle the Conqueror”), Carmen Maura of Spain (for “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”) and West German director Wim Wenders (“Wings of Desire”). West Berlin Cultural Affairs Minister Volker Hassemer dreamed up the idea of the Felix two years ago as a way to build bridges across the European political divide and to help compete against the U.S. commercial challenge. The two-hour ceremony--broadcast throughout Europe from West Berlin’s Theater des Westens--will be held in a different European city every year.
