Flu Wiped Out UCLA’s Opener in 1957
The USC-UCLA game Saturday at the Rose Bowl won’t be the first UCLA game affected by an opponent’s illness.
In 1957, the Bruins’ scheduled opener against Florida was canceled when 65 Florida players were diagnosed as having the Asian flu.
The Gators pulled out of the game on the advice of team doctors.
On less than two weeks’ notice, UCLA scheduled a game against Air Force, which was in its third year of intercollegiate competition. UCLA beat the Falcons, 47-0.
In 1963, the USC-UCLA game was postponed a week because of the assassination of President Kennedy.
