NBA Roundup : Schayes Helps Nuggets Put Away Spurs, 139-112
Danny Schayes had 31 points and 14 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets beat the San Antonio Spurs, 139-112, Thursday night at Denver.
The Spurs, who lost for the fourth straight time, have not won in Denver since 1986.
Schayes, who scored 26 points Tuesday night against the Lakers, made 12 of 15 shots and 7 of 9 free throws. Ten of his points came in the first 3 minutes to help give Denver a 17-8 lead.
The Nuggets widened their lead in the second period by making 17 of 21 shots and out-rebounding the Spurs, 15-3, while increasing a 34-27 first-quarter lead to 71-55 at halftime. Alex English and Michael Adams each scored 25 points, and Fat Lever added 18 points and 13 rebounds for Denver. Johnny Dawkins led San Antonio with 23 points, and Alvin Robertson added 17.
Utah 123, Portland 99--Darrell Griffith scored 8 of his 40 points during a 14-point run at the beginning of the fourth quarter as the Jazz beat the Trail Blazers at Salt Lake City.
Karl Malone scored 29 points and Thurl Bailey 17 for Utah. Clyde Drexler led Portland with 24, and Steve Johnson came off the bench for 18.
New Jersey 105, Milwaukee 96--Roy Hinson scored 23 points, and Walter Berry added 21 as the Nets beat the Bucks at Milwaukee.
Trailing, 78-76, with 7 minutes left, the Nets went on an 11-0 run. Berry had 5 and John Bagley 4 in that spurt, which gave the Nets a 9-point lead with 3:45 remaining.
Ricky Pierce led Milwaukee with 28 points, and Paul Pressey had 21, including 13 in the final quarter. The Nets played without center Joe Barry Carroll, who had a light cast put on his left hand, which he injured Tuesday night at Charlotte, N.C.
Dallas 105, Charlotte 93--The Hornets’ halftime lead of 49-48 was the first in franchise history. But the Mavericks came back in the third quarter to score 10 straight points and outshoot the Hornets, 57% to 12%, for an eventual rout at Dallas.
Mark Aguirre scored 26 points, and Rolando Blackman added 21 for Dallas. Kelly Tripucka led the expansion Hornets with 15 points.
Houston 113, Miami 107--Akeem Olajuwon scored 7 points to spark a third-quarter run as the Rockets beat the winless Heat at Houston.
Miami (0-6) rallied to take its only lead at 62-61 on a basket by Anthony Taylor with 8:37 left in the third period.
But Houston responded with 15 consecutive points, including 7 by Olajuwon, who finished with 29 points and 14 rebounds.
Sylvester Gray had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the expansion Heat.
