NHL Roundup : Flames Hold Off Devils, 5-3, for Fourth Win in a Row
Joe Nieuwendyk and Al MacInnis scored first-period goals to get the Calgary Flames started toward their fourth consecutive victory, a 5-3 decision over the New Jersey Devils Thursday night at East Rutherford, N.J.
Pat Verbeek brought the Devils within 1 goal in the second period, but Joel Otto scored to extend Calgary’s lead to 3-1.
In the third period, Hakan Loob and Jiri Hrdina gave the Flames a 5-1 lead. The Devils came back with goals by Patrik Sundstrom and Kirk Muller, but they were not enough.
Montreal 5, Boston 2--Mike McPhee scored twice, and rookie Steve Martinson scored the go-ahead goal as Montreal spoiled the 60th birthday party of Boston Garden.
The Canadiens, beaten only once in their last 9 games, came back from a 2-1 deficit to move into a tie with Boston for the Adams Division lead.
The Canadiens were outshot, 9-7, in the first period, but then they took command and outshot the Bruins, 14-4 and 10-6, in the second and third to finish with a 31-19 edge.
St. Louis 3, Philadelphia 1--Bernie Federko scored 2 goals to lead the Blues to their first victory at Philadelphia in 16 years.
Federko, who tied the game with his first goal in the second period, scored the game-winner on a power play at 7:16 of the third. Pelle Eklund scored the Flyers’ goal.
Minnesota 7, Vancouver 6--The North Stars rallied for 4 goals in the third period, 2 by Dave Gagner, to snap a 5-5 tie and beat the Canucks at Bloomington, Minn.
Minnesota’s Dino Ciccarelli scored his 14th career hat trick, and Vancouver’s Trevor Linden scored twice within a 6-minute span and added a third goal with 1:14 remaining in the third period for his own hat trick.
