Democrats Attack Atwater as Player of ‘Pit Bull’ Politics
PHOENIX — Democratic Party officials today denounced President-elect George Bush’s choice for Republican Party chairman as a practitioner of “a pit-bull style of politics.”
“If Lee Atwater is going to be the next Republican chairman, I think we know what the next election cycle is going to look like,” said Texas Democratic Party Chairman Robert Slagle.
Atwater managed the Bush presidential campaign against Democrat Michael S. Dukakis. Many Democrats blame him for the negative tone of the Republican campaign.
“We are ready to take on Lee Atwater and those who would create a pit-bull style of politics,” said Rick Wiener, the Michigan Democratic Party chairman.
