Dissident nuns locked in their cloistered convent for more than six weeks refused again to cooperate with a Vatican envoy making a second attempt to break the deadlock, a church spokesman said. The five Discalced Carmelite nuns holed up in the infirmary at the Monastery of the Most Blessed Virgin of Mt. Carmel in Morris Township, N.J., refused to meet with the Rev. Kevin Culligan on his return, the spokesman said. It was his second trip since the nuns locked themselves in Oct. 4 to protest what they described as their prioress’s moves to liberalize the monastery’s traditionally austere daily regimen.
