NHL Roundup : Kurri Scores 3 as Oilers Rout Penguins
Without Mario Lemeiux, the Pittsburgh Penguins are not quite as explosive as they are when the National Hockey League’s goals and points leader is in the lineup.
As Lemeiux missed his second consecutive game because of a sprained right wrist, Pittsburgh (8-7) was overmatched by the Edmonton Oilers, 7-3, Tuesday night at Pittsburgh.
Jari Kurri scored 3 goals, including 2 in a 5-goal second period to lead the Oilers (8-5-2).
Edmonton trailed, 2-0, entering the period but scored three times in 2:16 during a major high-sticking penalty against Zarley Zalapski, who also was given a game misconduct when his stick cut Kevin Lowe.
Pittsburgh, which has the NHL’s most successful power play, came up empty on nine opportunities.
Edmonton also was without its leader as Mark Messier sat out the first of his 6-game suspension for a high-sticking incident at Vancouver on Oct. 23.
N.Y. Islanders 4, N.Y. Rangers 3--Greg Gilbert scored with 2:26 left as Islanders beat their Patrick Division rivals at Uniondale, N.Y.
Gilbert’s 55-footer from just inside the blue line went past Ranger goaltender Bob Froese for the game winner.
The loss was the third straight for the division-leading Rangers (8-5-1) after a 7-game winning streak. The Islanders (6-7-1), outshot by the Rangers, 40-24, won their second straight game.
Goalkeeper Kelly Hrudey stopped 37 shots for the Islanders.
Tony Granato gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal 2 minutes into the period. Granato, a rookie right winger, scored on his rebound.
Defenseman Michel Petit made it 2-0 with a 40-footer on a power play at 6:30. The Islanders rallied to tie on goals by Gerald Diduck and Bryan Trottier, and eventually pulled out the victory.
Winnipeg 8, Quebec 4--Dale Hawerchuk had 3 goals and 2 assists, and Andrew McBain had 2 goals and 3 assists as the Jets won at Quebec City.
Fredrik Olausson, Ray Neufeld and Doug Smail also scored for the Jets (5-5-3).
Anton Stastny, his brother Peter, defenseman Steve Finn and Trevor Stienburg each scored for the Nordiques (6-10).
