BYU Officials Talk to Football Players About Alleged Slurs Against Aztecs
SAN DIEGO — Officials from Brigham Young and San Diego State have concluded their look into charges that members of the BYU football team made racial slurs against SDSU players in a game Saturday night at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, the athletic directors from both schools said Tuesday.
BYU Athletic Director Glen Tuckett said he spoke with several team members and that Coach LaVell Edwards spoke with the entire team about the matter. Tuckett said no further action is planned.
Tuckett would not say if the players admitted to making racial slurs, but said BYU players claimed the SDSU players “provoked” them.
“There are two sides to every story,” Tuckett said.
SDSU Athletic Director Fred Miller said he talked with Tuckett and is satisfied that “we have a handle on a solution.”
“In the heat of battle, things are said (by both sides) that shouldn’t be,” Miller said.
After Saturday’s game--won by the the Aztecs, 27-15--SDSU players said members of BYU’s team directed racial epithets at SDSU players on the field.
“They were yelling all kinds of racial stuff at our black players throughout the game,” center Kevin Wells, a white member of the SDSU team, said Saturday night.
