Safety Dale Is 1 of 2 Waived by Chargers
Charger strong safety Jeff Dale, a full-time starter in his first 2 years with the team but missing for all of 1987 because of a back injury, was 1 of 2 players waived Tuesday by the team.
Jeff Jackson, a linebacker who was signed as a replacement player during the 1987 strike, also was waived. Safety Patrick Miller, on injured reserve since injuring a knee during the second regular season game against San Francisco, will be activated.
Dale, drafted in the second round in 1985 out of Louisiana State, started 16 regular season games at free safety in his rookie year (earning UPI All-Rookie honors and returning an interception for a touchdown against Pittsburgh) and then was moved to strong safety in 1986.
He was the team’s second-leading tackler in 1986 with 101 (including a team-leading 85 unassisted) and also had 4 interceptions, including 2 against Denver with 89 yards in returns.
A disk injury suffered in the 1986-87 offseason kept him out of uniform all last year.
Jackson is a fourth-year linebacker from Auburn University who was signed as a free agent during the 1987 strike. Miller was also signed as a replacement player last year after being drafted and then waived by the 49ers.
BASKETBALL
Athletes in Action defeated UC Irvine, 133-131, in a defenseless game at the Bren Center in Irvine.
It doesn’t count in the record book, but the 131 points are the most ever scored by an Irvine team.
AIA guard Lorenzo Romar, the final player cut by the Houston Rockets last week, took out his frustrations on Irvine, scored 25 points and had 13 assists.
Irvine’s fullcourt press forced AIA into 16 first-half turnovers and the Anteaters led, 63-59, at halftime. But AIA solved the Anteater defense in the opening minutes of the second half and broke free for numerous uncontested layups. AIA’s first 15 baskets of the second half were either dunks or layins and, with 11:05 remaining in the game, AIA led, 93-83.
Irvine rallied to take the lead, then fell behind again. AIA made 6 of 7 free throws in the final minute to hang on for the victory.
