Nicklaus’ Back Problem May Require Surgery
Bruce Waxman, the back specialist who examined Jack Nicklaus in West Palm Beach, Fla., said Tuesday that the 48-year-old golfer has a disk problem that may require surgery.
Waxman said the strain caused by the constant lower back stress of a golf swing has created a degenerative problem.
Nicklaus, who has 20 victories in golf’s major tournaments, said he will consult further with specialists and decide whether surgery is necessary before deciding what his playing schedule will be.
The next tournament on Nicklaus’ 1988 schedule is the Skins Game Nov. 26-27.
“After I get the opinions, I’ll need to make a decision whether the results would allow me to play--and to play like the old Jack Nicklaus,” he said.
