A Navy Tomahawk cruise missile with a new type of engine was launched from San Nicolas Island and flown on a 700-mile course to San Clemente Island where it was recovered by parachute, a spokesman said. The land-attack cruise missile was fired from a fixed ground launcher on San Nicolas for a developmental test that officials called successful. The test provided “significant data” on the engine and the missile, the spokesman said. The engine was described as an improved version of the current turbofan engine used in the Tomahawk.
