Former South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan is ready to surrender his wealth to stop escalating demonstrations demanding his punishment, officials of the ruling Democratic Justice Party said. Chun will give up most of his assests, they said, if President Roh Tae Woo ensures the former leader’s safety. Chun has about $5.7 million in personal assets, including a $1.4-million residence in Seoul. “Mr. Chun still thinks he has no ill-gotten wealth, but he is willing to donate most of his assets if he is assured that it would quiet down the raging public protests,” the party officials said.
