A Japanese toy maker, trying to make amends for its Little Black Sambo character, will donate more than $250,000 in toys to poor children in the San Francisco Bay Area this Christmas. Sanrio Toy Co. also has stopped making the character and two similar black-faced toys. Members of the congressional Black Caucus, who have been fighting racial stereotyping by Japanese companies operating in the United States, consider the giveaway a major victory. “Of all the Japanese companies we’ve been negotiating with, they’re the only one that has gone beyond an apology to come up with a plan with specific proposals,” said Rep. Mervyn M. Dymally (D-Compton), chairman of the caucus.
