Winnie Mandela paid a hospital visit to her husband, Nelson R. Mandela, who is recovering from tuberculosis, amid South African media speculation that the long-jailed nationalist will soon be freed. But the government denied that the release of the African National Congress leader or any of his colleagues is imminent. Several local newspapers have been quoting government sources for the past week as saying that Mandela, 70, will be freed before the end of the year.
