Betts’ Score Rallies San Diego State to Tie UCLA in Soccer, 1-1
Jeff Betts scored with 2 minutes 33 seconds remaining in regulation as San Diego State rallied for a 1-1 overtime tie with host UCLA.
The Aztecs (15-2-4), ranked No. 5 in the country, and UCLA (12-4-4) await today’s announcement of pairings for the 24-team National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division I championship tournament.
SDSU reached the NCAA finals before losing to Clemson last season.
Billy Thompson scored at 15:05 to give UCLA a 1-0 lead at halftime.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC San Diego will begin defense of its NCAA Division III volleyball title by playing host to the West Regional Thursday through Saturday.
The Tritons (30-8), ranked No. 1 in the country, are the top-seeded team and will get a bye in the first round along with second-seeded Colorado College.
UCSD, which has won four national titles since 1981, will play the winner of the match between Pomona-Pitzer and MIT Friday at 7:30 p.m. Pomona-Pitzer will play MIT Thursday at 5 p.m.
Cal State San Bernardino will meet La Verne at 7:30, with the winner facing Colorado College Friday at 5. The semifinal winners will play Saturday at 7:30.
The regional champion advances to the tournament semifinals and plays the East Regional champion at a site to be determined.
GOLF
The Amateurs held off the Pros to win the 17th Hine Cup, 69-66, at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Course.
The Amateurs led, 27-18, after Saturday’s rounds and held on for the victory despite being outscored 48-42 by the Pros Sunday.
The tournament featured the top 10 amateurs and PGA professionals from San Diego County in match and best-ball play. The Amateurs lead the series, 9-8.
