At least 150 prisoners escaped through a tunnel from a military detention camp in southern Sri Lanka, but 78 wwere recaptured, officials said. Almost all the prisoners had been detained on suspicion of belonging to the People’s Liberation Front, a radical Sinhalese group blamed by authorities for more than 500 killings in the last 15 months. The front has vowed to kill anyone who supports the Sinhalese-dominated government’s peace accord for ending a separatist war waged by Tamil guerrillas.
