The Texas Forest Service battled nine fires throughout the piney woods of East Texas and kept a wary eye on an 1,100-acre blaze that threatened at least a dozen homes before it was contained, officials in Votaw, Tex., said. Gary Lacox, of the forest service in Woodville, said that there were no reports of serious injuries or damage to buildings. Fire crews with bulldozers battled three fires in Newton County, two in Hardin County and one each in Jasper, Tyler, Liberty and Houston counties, officials said. Earlier, at least 18 forest fires had burned more than 2,000 acres around the state, Lacox said.
