Motorcycle Star Spencer’s Pro Auto Debut Set

Freddie Spencer, a motorcycle racing legend and three-time World Grand Prix Road Racing champion, makes his professional auto racing debut in Round 11 of the Barber Saab Pro Series October 23, at Del Mar.

Spencer, 26, of Shreveport, La., turns to auto racing after a brilliant motorcycle road racing career that saw him labeled as “the greatest rider in the 40-year history of the sport.†In 1985, at the age of 23, Spencer stunned the racing world by becoming the only man to win two World Championships in a single season.

“Fast Freddie†won both the 250cc and 500cc titles for Honda Racing Corp. He won his first World Championship for Honda in the 500cc class in 1983.

Spencer makes his professional four-wheel racing debut in America’s premier auto racing series for aspiring young drivers. The Barber Saab Pro Series’ unique equal-spec formula ensures driver talent is the deciding factor in who makes it to vicory lane. Professionals from around the globe showcase their talents and hone their skills in identical open-wheel cars powered by stock Saab Turbo engines.

The 100-km Barber Saab race is part of a full weekend’s program featuring the Camel Grand Prix of Southern California for IMSA GTP cars.
