Quarter horse jockey Lute Proctor suffered three cracked vertebrae and a skull fracture Friday night when his mount, Rare Crusader, collapsed during the ninth race at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Proctor, 20, was taken to Los Alamitos General Hospital and placed in the intensive care unit. Proctor was reported conscious and in “stable condition” Saturday by Ed Burgart, a race course spokesman. Proctor is expected to be out of racing four to six months.

Rare Crusader collapsed about 300 yards from the finish line during the $27,100 Josie’s Bar Handicap. Trainer Daryn Charlton said the horse broke its right femur bone and was destroyed.
