Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said he hopes that talks on a cease-fire in his nation’s civil war can be resumed within 15 days in Panama or Belize. He made his remarks in Managua after meeting with Roman Catholic Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, mediator in the war between the leftist Sandinistas and the U.S.-backed Contras. However, sources said Ortega is standing by his refusal to meet the Contras face-to-face. Asked if he will agree to a truce for the New Year’s holiday, Ortega laughed and replied “no” because the Contras “violated a prior agreement” over Christmas. The Contras deny they broke the truce.
