San Diego High School Basketball : Patrick Henry Warms Up When it Needs to For 64-52 Win

It didn’t take long for Patrick Henry High School to warm up to a cold Santana High gym.

Clairemont took the heat as Patrick Henry went on scoring binges when it had to and won, 64-52, in a first-round game of the Santana tournament.

Except for cold starts in the first and third quarters, Patrick Henry controlled the game at both ends of the court.

Guard Greg Edwards scored a season-high 20 points, primarily from the outside, and forward Terrence Hamilton scored 17 points, including three runaway dunks, to lead Patrick Henry (6-2). Ray McDavid and Lamont Jackson scored 19 points apiece for Clairemont (2-6).

Patrick Henry led, 18-12, early in the second quarter and threatened to make the game a blowout when it outscored Clairemont, 13-2.

Clairemont, trailing, 35-24, at the half, rallied in the third quarter on three-point baskets and Patrick Henry miscues.

With Patrick Henry leading, 39-26, early in the third quarter, Clairemont outscored the Patriots, 11-4.

With six minutes remaining, Clairemont cut Patrick Henry’s lead to 49-44 on a three-point shot from the top by Jackson. Patrick Henry, however, scored six straight points to take a 55-44 lead and Clairemont never threatened again.

In other Santana tournament games, Lincoln (9-1) defeated Grossmont, 99-59, behind Aaron Wilhite’s 25 points and 23 points from Carl Gaines. West Anchorage defeated Chula Vista, 57-53, and Santana beat Hilltop, 60-45.

MT. CARMEL INVITATIONAL

Poway 88, Ramona 40--Dave Delaney scored 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and Ty Nichols added 19 points and 5 assists to lead Poway (7-2), which led, 44-21, at the half. Chad Nelson had 17 points for Ramona.

BARON OPTIMIST

El Camino 82, Bonita Vista 44--Scott Oatsvall scored 19 points and Lee Cobb added 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead El Camino (7-1), which led by as many as 40 points.

Torrey Pines 75, Crawford 47--Neal Pollard scored 20 points and Courtie Miller added 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Torrey Pines (11-0) into a semifinal game with El Camino.

BURNABY INVITATIONAL

Sweetwater 69, Mountain 62 (OT)--Joe McDowell scored 33 points to lead Sweetwater in a first-round game at Vancouver, Canada. Melvin Rushing scored 13 points and Charles Starnes added 12 for Sweetwater.
