Valley Gets Well With 49-13 Win

Football practice at Valley College resembles triage at a M.A.S.H. compound. Players hobble through workouts with pulled muscles and taped ankles. They prepare for the upcoming game while nursing injuries from the previous one.

Come Saturday night, however, the prospect of playing in a Southern California Conference game acts like a magical panacea on Valley’s injured ranks.

No player wants to sit out while the team is undefeated.

Valley, ranked fourth in the state and second in Southern California by the JC Athletic Bureau, improved its record to 6-0 (5-0 in conference play) with a 49-13 win at San Bernardino Valley College on Saturday night.

“These kids get so up for the game that their aches and pains go away,” Valley trainer Angelo Cimity said.

A pulled calf muscle hasn’t kept tailback Dondre Bausley, the state’s leading rusher and scorer, on the sidelines. But he was held to just 1 touchdown and 38 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Valley Coach Chuck Ferrero credits Bausley equally for his exploits on the field as well as what he endures just to suit up each week.

“Somehow, on Saturday, he’s always ready to go,” Ferrero said.

But Bausley is not the only Monarch tended to by the trainer.

Fullback Howard Howell played with a fractured right wrist he suffered last week against Mt. San Jacinto.

“We have three or four guys playing with broken hands,” Ferrero said. “A lot of places they wouldn’t play, but they play here. They’re tough kids.”

Valley showed San Bernardino why it is leading the state in offense, averaging 494.8 yards a game. The Monarchs picked on the Indian defense, ranked second in conference, for seven touchdowns.

The Monarchs generated 256 yards of offense, including just 95 rushing yards. Quarterback Barry Hanks threw three touchdown passes, completing 6 of 13 passes for 161 yards. Wide receiver James Reaves led the Valley receiving corps with three touchdowns. He caught scoring passes of 44 and 24 yards and ran in a 57-yard punt return.

Leading, 21-7, at halftime, Valley ran away from the Indians in the third quarter with three more touchdowns, two from Reaves. The Monarchs added their seventh touchdown with two seconds left in the game on Greg Hodges’ six-yard scoring run.
