The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper, which had refused to publish six “Doonesbury” strips satirizing Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham, printed all of them along with almost two pages of letters complaining about the omissions. “We do not condone the offensive language used by Gov. Mecham and then repeated by Garry Trudeau via the ‘Doonesbury’ comic strip,” the paper said in an editorial. “Given the strong feelings of our readers, however, including those who might be most offended by the language, we now publish the ‘Doonesbury’ panels. . . .” In the strip, Mecham was quoted as referring to blacks and homosexuals as “pickaninnies” and “queers.”
