Volunteers frantically filled sandbags, and overflow sewage and storm water was dumped into Lake Michigan as more rain raised swollen waterways in already flooded areas and Chicago’s monthly precipitation record continued to swell. Overnight rainfall at O’Hare International Airport, logged by the National Weather Service for a 12-hour period, was 1.27 inches. That pushed the monthly rainfall total for August to more than 15.7 inches, a new record for any month in Chicago history.
