Navy Secretary James H. Webb, a decorated Marine combat veteran of the Vietnam War, said he had selected the first Navy warship to be named for a battle from that war. In remarks prepared for delivery to the U.S. Marine Corps League in Washington, Webb announced the ship would be an Aegis guided missile cruiser bearing the name Hue City. The battle for Hue was fought in 1968, after the North Vietnamese took over the old imperial capital during the Tet offensive. Marines played a key role in the battle.
