‘Panic in Gulf, Money in Bank’
If spreading oil on the Persian Gulf won’t calm the waters, perhaps we should give diplomacy a chance. The Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini would pay a bundle for a fleet of modern warships delivered to an Iranian port.
Once our reflagged naval units became their property, the Iranians would sweep their own mines to protect their investment. An Iranian navy would prevent the gulf from becoming a Soviet lake and we’d be home and dry.
Proceeds of the sale could put our shipyards back to work. Any receipts in excess of replacement cost could be used to fight communism. Neat idea, hmmm?
