Newmont Mining’s largest shareholder expressed strong support for the company’s management in the face of a possible takeover fight against an investor group led by T. Boone Pickens Jr. London-based Consolidated Gold Fields also said it had rejected an invitation to meet with Pickens and would act to “prevent anyone from interfering with the success Newmont is achieving or otherwise damaging our interest.” Ivanhoe Partners, the group led by Pickens and Alabama businessman John Harbert III, holds 9.95% of Newmont’s 66.4 million common shares outstanding.
