An East German team broke the world...
An East German team broke the world record in the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay at the European swimming meet at Strasbourg, France.
The team of Manuela Stellmach, Astrid Strauss, Anke Mohring and Heike Friedrich was timed in 7 minutes 55.47 seconds, breaking the mark of 7:59.33 set in the 1986 World Championships in Madrid by another East German team.
The East Germans won by more than 20 meters over Romania, second in 8:09.15, with West Germany third at 8:09.89.
In men’s competition, Anders Holmertz of Sweden upset world record-holder Michael Gross of West Germany in the 200-meter freestyle, winning in 1:48.44, just one second off Gross’ world record.
