Fouts Says He Passed Physical
LA JOLLA — For the second time during this Charger camp, quarterback Dan Fouts on Tuesday morning took his physical examination, and he thinks he passed it.
But he will not be able to practice until owner Alex Spanos lets him.
According to Steve Ortmayer, director of football operations, that’s how the process will work. Fouts must first be given the go-ahead from team doctors and then from Spanos.
Ortmayer said Tuesday night he still didn’t know if Fouts had passed his physical.
On July 31, the day veterans reported to camp, Fouts took the physical and said he was told he passed. Since then, the Chargers have said he did not pass.
Spanos was unavailable for comment Tuesday. But he previously made his point clear: Fouts must either tell him he’s willing to play under his current contract, which calls for a base salary of $750,000, or possibly be traded.
Fouts reiterated Tuesday that he will not speak with Spanos directly and that Spanos should deal with Fouts’ agent, Howard Slusher.
“I feel I’m capable (of practicing),” said Fouts, who is on the physically unable to perform list. “Did I pass the physical? I think so. But ask them.”
