Alpine Bridge Collapses, 1 Dies
CHAMONIX, France — An Alpine bridge collapsed today, killing one tourist and injuring at least 15 others who fell as many as 80 feet between a glacier and a mountainside, officials said.
About 25 to 30 people were believed to have been on the 70-foot-long wooden bridge leading to the popular Sea of Ice glacier park when it collapsed, police said. One body was recovered. Eleven people, who suffered injuries from minor to severe, were being taken to a Chamonix hospital in three helicopters, while the others were treated at the scene. The search for other victims continued.
