Conservatives Push for More Military Aid for Contras
WASHINGTON — Conservative leaders launched a campaign Tuesday to pressure Congress to approve $310 million in military aid for the contras in Nicaragua.
Rep. Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.), speaking for the group, said at a news conference that the diplomatic peace initiative being pursued by the Administration is unworkable.
Kemp said conservatives have “warned that any plan that halts aid to the freedom fighters before the Soviet colonial presence is out of Nicaragua, before democracy comes to Nicaragua, is a plan that is flawed at its core and that is doomed to fail.”
Kemp, who is seeking the GOP presidential nomination, said that when Congress returns next month, he and Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) will seek $310 million in military aid for the contras.
