A 16th-Century painting stolen from a church in southern Poland earlier this month has been recovered and three people have been arrested, Polish authorities said Tuesday. The nine-foot-tall canvas, painted by an anonymous pupil of Michelangelo, was found in a barn eight miles from the village church in Biecz, where it was stolen less than two weeks ago. An art expert said on state television that 50% of the painting, depicting Christ’s removal from the cross, had been damaged after being cut out of its frame, rolled up and stashed away in the barn.
