Saudi Envoy, Hurt in Tehran Riot, Dies

LONDON —  A Saudi diplomat, hurt when his country’s embassy in Tehran was ransacked by protesters after Iranian pilgrims were killed during riots in Mecca last month, died Monday night from his injuries, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The agency, monitored by the British Broadcasting Corp., quoted “responsible sources” at the Saudi Foreign Ministry as saying “procrastination and delay” by Iran had prevented the transfer of the diplomat, Moussad Ghamdi, for treatment in Saudi hospitals.

Ghamdi was hurt when he fell out of a window as demonstrators took over the embassy, accusing Saudi Arabia of responsibility for the Mecca violence on July 31 when hundreds of people, mostly Iranians, were killed.

Saudi Arabia says 402 people died, 275 of them Iranians, in Iranian-instigated violence near the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Iran says the clashes were masterminded by the United States.
