Battle Over Brian Batey
I was quite interested in your story about Brian Batey and his plea for control of his destiny. Good for him. Emancipated minor status is probably the most logical legal solution for him. It would be interesting to compare Brian’s situation with those children portrayed in the recent PBS documentary shown during Gay Pride Week called “Not All Parents Are Straight.” Having a gay parent is probably a lot more common for many children than the public realizes.
I share custody of my teen-age daughter with her gay father who has finally come to terms with his life style since our divorce many years ago. She has just gone to live with him for her high school years with my blessing and support. He’s an excellent parent and I consider myself quite lucky to have had a cooperative, co-parenting partnership with him all these years. I wouldn’t dream of interfering in our daughter’s love and respect for her father, or his for her.
As Craig Corbett says, “If cooking and cleaning and vacuuming and mowing the lawn and going to school and going to work is a homosexual environment. . . .”
Good for him! Good for Brian. How sad for Betty Batey that she’s blinded by her “religion” from seeing a good human being simply trying to live. If that’s Christianity at its best, God help us all.
