A Different Sort of Bishop
Carl Fisher, “The Preaching Bishop” (by Tim Waters, July 12) relates his experiences during the ‘60s civil rights movement (a movement striving to dispel the belief that blacks hold a different place and role in society than whites), and speaks of racism within the Catholic Church, while blithely condoning another “ism,” sexism in the name of religion / his church.
His statements “Woman should not become priests” and “There are different roles for men and women,” with a few minor alterations could reflect the beliefs regarding blacks, he laments.
Sadly ironic, isn’t it?
