Development of the Irvine Coast

In your editorial of last Sunday (Aug. 2) about the coastal land between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach you seemed to approve the latest plan for its development. I disagree. That land should not be touched, except to be made into a national urban park.

This almost took place at the end of the Carter Administration in 1979, but the following Administration dismissed it. What we need in place of more hotels and houses in Orange County is a place where the public can enjoy nature and unwind from a very stressful environment. With millions of people jammed into Southern California, a coastal area like this should be set as a top priority for a park.

Ironically, your editorial above it was entitled “Time to Plan for Traffic Jams.” Developing this open space will create many more traffic jams, congestion and pollution. You also stated that “what a difference a decade made” in cutting back on the development in this area. Perhaps if we could stall another decade there would be no development at all and we would have our park.
