Golf Roundup : Rodriguez, Henning Tied for Lead at 65
Defending champion Chi Chi Rodriguez and South African Harold Henning each shot a seven-under-par 65 Friday to share the first-round lead in the $250,000 Digital Seniors golf tournament at Concord, Mass.
Jimmy Powell and former U.S. Open champion Orville Moody were two shots back, while Jim King, Dale Douglass and Howie Johnson had 68s on the 6,453-yard Nashawtuc Country Club course.
Henning, playing in the afternoon, toured the front nine in six-under-par 30.
Rodriguez, the PGA Seniors Tour’s leading money winner with $316,306 so far this year, had three birdies on the front side and four coming in.
“It was a wonderful day,” said Rodriguez, who was followed by the largest gallery. “I call my gallery Arnie’s leftovers. Americans always root for the underdog. They had to work to make it, too.”
Heavy rain washed out the second round of the $300,000 Henredon LPGA tournament at High Point, N.C.
The rain, which began about 5 a.m., soaked the Willow Creek Golf Course for about three hours. Tournament officials made two attempts to start play, but the creek that winds its way through the course had overflowed its banks, sending muddy brown water across the fairways and making play impossible.
Plans call for the second round to be played today, with the 36-hole cut to be made at the conclusion of the round. The tournament will be completed Sunday after 54 holes instead of the scheduled 72.
