Mohammad Barakat SPORT: Field Hockey POSITION: Midfielder Moorpark’s Barakat, 20, is one of three players on the Pan American field hockey team from the 1984 Olympic squad. He was the 1985 Field Hockey Assn. of America (FHAA) Player of the Year.

Craig Buck SPORT: Volleyball POSITION: Middle Blocker Tarzana’s Buck, 28, has been a member of U.S. teams which have won Olympics, World Cup and World Championship titles. A two-time All-American at Pepperdine, he had the highest efficiency rating and was the leading blocker in the 1984 Olympics.

David Brinton SPORT: Cycling North Hollywood’s Brinton, 20, was part of the team that broke a U.S. cycling record in the 4k team pursuit at the Goodwill Games in Moscow in 1986. The Americans finished fourth in 4:21.273. He was sixth in the one-kilometer individual race in 1:06.330. He has been called the Spud Webb of cyclists at 5-9, 137 pounds.

Jody Campbell SPORT: Water Polo Canoga Park’s four-time All-American at Stanford, Campbell was one of the top players on the U.S. team that won a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics. Sandra De La Riva SPORT: Team Handball POSITION: Backcourt Chatsworth’s De La Riva, 25, competed for the U.S. team that finished fourth in the 1984 Olympics. She is one of only three former Olympians still on the team.

Marv Dunphy SPORT: Volleyball POSITION: Coach Topanga Canyon’s Dunphy, 38, coached at Pierce College before leading Pepperdine to two national championships. Tommy Hoang SPORT: Field Hockey Westlake Village’s Hoang, 20, has had an eventful last few weeks. He was sworn in as an American citizen on July 20. That was the last hurdle between him and a berth on the Pan American team. His family fled Vietnam 12 years ago and settled in Thousand Oaks.

Valerie Brisco SPORT: Track EVENT: 4 x 400 Relay

Cal State Northridge’s Brisco, 27, won gold medals in the 200- and 400-meter races and the 1,600-meter relay at the ’84 Olympics.

Denean Howard SPORT: Track EVENT: 400m, 4 x 400 relay Sylmar’s Howard was an Olympic gold medalist in 1984 as member of the 4X400 meter U.S. relay team. She emerged as a world-class runner while attending Kennedy High in Granada Hills. She qualified for the 1980 Olympics in the 400 at the age of 15, and was ranked first in the nation in the 400 in 1981 and 1982. Denean and sister Sherri were the first sisters to represent the U.S. on an Olympic track in the same event when they ran the 400 relay in 1984.

Charles Lakes SPORT: Gymnastics Newhall’s Lakes, 23, led Monroe High to three consecutive City titles from 1980-82. Known as a spectacular athlete and performer, he’s had trouble in the past with a lack of concentration. An admitted crowd-pleaser and showoff, Lakes says, “I care more about what the crowd thinks than what the judges think.”

Mike Lee SPORT: Field Hockey Simi Valley’s Lee, 22, a fullback, attended Moorpark College, where the U.S. team trains.

John O’Neill SPORT: Field Hockey Biographical information unavailable. Alvin Pagan SPORT: Field Hockey Simi Valley’s Pagan, 20, a forward, was the leading scorer for last year’s gold medal-winning squad in the Olympic Festival. He was the 1986 FHAA Player of the Year.

Richard Purser SPORT: Field Hockey POSITION: Coach Thousand Oaks’ Purser is originally from Greensborough, Victoria, Australia. He has been trying to change a team that has concentrated on defense in the past into an offensive threat.

George Ross SPORT: Shooting A member of the U.S. shooting team since 1982, the 47-year-old from Saugus missed making the 1984 Olympic team by seven points. He was a member of the Pan American team in 1983. He won a silver medal in individual competition and the U.S. team won a gold.

Irina Rubinshstein SPORT: Rhythmic Gymnastics Agoura’s Rubinshstein, 16, will be a junior at Agoura High. She was 19th in all-around rhythmic gymnastics competition at the Goodwill Games in 1986. She is Soviet-born, 5-4 and 103 pounds.

Brian Spencer SPORT: Field Hockey Canoga Park’s Spencer, 25, a forward, is one of the most-experienced field hockey players in the nation. He has been a member of the U.S. national team since 1981 and has played in five Olympic Festivals.

Jeff Stork SPORT: Volleyball Topanga Canyon’s Stork, 27, is the starting setter for the U.S. team. The left-hander was a three-time All-American at Pepperdine after graduating from Taft High.

Mike Tully SPORT: Track EVENT: Pole Vault Encino’s Tully was a silver medalist in the 1984 Olympics. He also qualified for the 1980 Olympics in Moscw, but did not compete because of the U.S. boycott. He has set three world marks and six national records during his career.
