Rhode Island Boat Wins Sailing Pre-Trials
SAN DIEGO — Despite not finishing the seventh and final race, the boats that were leading going into Friday’s races won the Star and Soling class titles at the 1987 Olympic Pre-Trials Regatta at the San Diego Yacht Club.
Ed Adams and Tom Olsen of Newport, R.I., finished with 27 points to win the Star class title. Mark Reynolds and Hal Haenel of San Diego finished second with 33.4 points.
Skipper John Kostecki and crewmen Bob Billingham and Will Bayless of San Francisco easily won the Soling title with 19.7 points. Skipper Harry Melges and crewmen Brian Porter and Hans Melges were second with 36.4 points.
The regatta was a preparatory competition for the Pre-Olympic Regatta, which will be at Pusan, South Korea, in late September.
