Phelps, seeded No. 7, defeated Marianna Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the third round.
Cynthia MacGregor, a former San Diego State player, and her sister Cammy were defeated in their first-round doubles match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, by Lea Antonoplis and Barbara Gerken.
