Elly Hakami upset fifth-seeded and defending champion Melissa Gurney, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, Wednesday in the second round of the San Diego Virginia Slims women’s tennis tournament at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club.

It was the second time the unseeded Hakami had defeated Gurney in the past two weeks. Hakami, ranked No. 65 in the world, beat Gurney last week in the California Open, in which she also defeated Kathy Jordan and Terry Phelps.

Gurney was one of eight seeds who lost in the first two rounds.

Robin White, seeded No. 6, lost to Isabelle Demongeot of France, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round.
