Kim Dae Jung to Join Party Led by Rival
SEOUL, South Korea — Leading dissident Kim Dae Jung said today he will join the opposition party led by Kim Young Sam, but the two rivals failed to agree on which of them should run for president.
The two Kims met to discuss political strategy as well as problems between them. A major issue has been Kim Dae Jung’s reluctance to accept an invitation to be the permanent adviser to the main opposition Reunification Democratic Party he helped found while banned from politics.
Kim Dae Jung said today he will join the party on Friday and his rival promised a welcoming ceremony for Saturday.
The Kims said they would decide between themselves which of them will challenge ruling party President Roh Tae Woo in elections late this year to choose a successor for President Chun Doo Hwan, who promises to step down next February.
“I still believe a single opposition candidate should be put up as soon as possible,” said Kim Young Sam.
