Italy’s lower house of Parliament voted 371 to 237 to back the five-party coalition of Italy’s new prime minister, Giovanni Goria, formally ending a government crisis that began in March with the resignation of Bettino Craxi. Goria, a Christian Democrat, leads the nation’s 47th government formed since the end of World War II. Goria told the lower house that his government intends to have a “high profile, because facing it is, among other things, the challenge of modernizing the country,” and “God knows how much need there is for that.”
