Lendl Boosts Earnings to $10.7 Million With 12th Straight Victory Over Gilbert
WASHINGTON — Ivan Lendl defeated Brad Gilbert for the 12th consecutive time Sunday, breezing to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the final of the $232,000 D.C. tennis tournament.
Lendl, ranked No. 1 in the world, needed only 56 minutes to dispose of Gilbert, who had upset Boris Becker in the semifinals.
In winning the 65th tournament of his career, Lendl added the $39,440 first-place check to his record $10.7 million in earnings.
Gilbert, who received $19,720 as runner-up, could manage only nine points off Lendl’s serve and had a chance to break in only two games. He double-faulted three times while failing to hold his serve three times in each set.
“Ivan was too good for me,” Gilbert said. “He showed why he’s the best player in the world.”
