The Soviet Union announced that it has successfully orbited a space radar platform believed to be the largest civilian Earth-study satellite ever sent into space. The news agency Tass said the satellite, named Cosmos 1870, was put into orbit July 25 and has begun its first “remote sensing” program, with the information to be used “in various branches of science and the national economy.” Aviation Week and Space Technology said the school bus-sized satellite weighing between 15 and 20 tons was launched from the Baikonur launch site in Soviet Central Asia.
