U.S. Under Secretary of State Michael H. Armacost and Pakistani Foreign Minister Sahabzada Yaqub Khan held talks on charges that Islamabad is trying to make nuclear weapons. Pakistani state television reported that Armacost, who arrived in Islamabad for a two-day visit, and Yaqub Khan discussed a move by the U.S. Congress to cut off aid to Pakistan for 105 days over an alleged smuggling case in Philadelphia. A Canadian resident of Pakistani origin, Arshad Pervez, is charged with attempting to export illegally a special steel alloy that could be used in a nuclear bomb-making program. Pakistan has denied any connection.
