The heat wave blamed for at least 72 deaths across the central United States continued unbroken, and Alabama issued a health alert warning people to take it easy. The temperature exceeded 100 degrees by midday at St. Louis and Kansas City, Little Rock, Ark., and Concordia, Kan., and overnight lows hovered around 80 degrees as far north as Chicago. The border between warm and cool air was marked by tornadoes and other damaging storms over parts of the Midwest and plains, and a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for parts of Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania.
