Newport Beach Player Reaches Semifinals of Golf Tournament
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Eric Woods of Newport Beach, Hugh Royer of Aiken, S.C., and Doug Martin and Craig Perks, both of Van Buren, Ohio, were quarterfinal winners Saturday in the Western Amateur golf tournament at Point O’Woods Golf & Country Club.
Woods plays Perks and Martin faces Royer in the semifinals today, with the championship round also scheduled for today.
Martin advanced with a 2 and 1 victory in match play Saturday over Len Mattiace, a 19-year-old Ponte Vedre, Fla. player who captured medalist honors Friday by completing 72 holes with an 8-under-par 276.
The field was cut to the low 16 scores Friday for Saturday and today’s match play.
Woods was a 2-and-1 winner Saturday over Robert McNamara of Frankfort, Ky. Royer defeated Nolan Henke of Fort Myers, Fla., 5 and 3, and Perks ousted David White of Conroe, Tex., 2 and 1.
Earlier Saturday, in the first round of match play, Woods was a 1-up winner over John O’Neill of Arcadia; Martin was a 1-up victor over Ed Pfister of Marilla, N.Y.; Perks defeated Kevin Sutherland of Sacramento, 3 and 2, and Royer downed Barry Fabyan of Worthington, Ohio, 2 and 1.
Mattiace defeated Brian Montgomery of Bristow, Okla., 4 and 3; Henke was a 3-and-2 winner over Brian Watts of Carrollton, Tex.; White ousted Stephen Flesch of Edgewood, Ky., 3 and 2, and McNamara downed Kevin Johnson of Pembroke, Mass., 3 and 2.
